August 2016 marks the return of rugby to the Olympic Games, and Team USA is set to defend their 1924 gold medal, the last Olympiad to feature the sport. Rugby isn’t as familiar to American audiences, but once Team USA fans experience rugby sevens, many fans will find their way to Minnesota rugby clubs looking for options to try the sport locally.

In Minnesota, Minnesota Youth Rugby (MYR) and MN Union runs competition throughout the year for youth and high school boys and girls. These leagues run throughout the spring and summer in the state, and include opportunities in both 7s and 15s.

MYR and MN Union wants to wish the US Women’s and Men’s Olympic Teams good luck on their quest for Gold at the 2016 Olympic Games! Parents or youth interested in learning more about the sport or participating in this great game can find a local club at or can go to our website at

The women's team will kick off the Olympics in play pool matches against Fiji, Colombia, and Australia on August 6. Six players of the roster were a part of the team that won Silver at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

The men’s team will begin their quest for gold in pool play matches against Fiji, Argentina, and Brazil on August 9. The team includes crossover-sport stars and some athletes who have played in both the US and overseas professionally.

All 6 Team USA pool play matches will be broadcast live, with a total of 34 rugby matches of the 2016 Olympic Games being broadcast live on NBCSN, CNBC, and USA Network.
